Transportation to the beach pavilions is provided on open-airtrams along a winding boardwalk through the preserve offering spectacular nature views. The boardwalks to the beach are 1,800 feet long and wind its way through the mangrove forests and coastal conservation areas.

Pelican Bay, originally known as Clam Bay, is a residential community in Naples, Florida, developed on 2,300 acres of land purchased in 1972 by Coral Ridge Properties. The area was developed with a focus on preservation and conservation, with much of the indigenous mangrove forest remaining intact and designated as a natural resource protection area. The name was changed to Pelican Bay in 1974.

In Pelican Bay, Florida, the indigenous mangrove forest is a significant and valued natural resource. When Pelican Bay was developed, the community prioritized conservation, ensuring that as ubstantial portion of the original mangrove forest was preserved. This area is now officially designated as a natural resource protection area by CollierCounty.  

Importance of the mangroves in Pelican Bay.

Shoreline Protection: The dense root systems of the mangroves help stabilize the shoreline, preventing erosion and offering protection against storms, hurricanes, and floods.

Water Quality: Mangroves filter pollutants and trap sediments, contributing to better water quality and clarity in the surrounding bays and estuaries.

Habitat and Nursery Grounds: The mangroves provide a vital habitat and nursery grounds for a wide variety of wildlife, including fish, crustaceans, shellfish, and birds. Many species depend on the mangroves for shelter, food, and breeding, including several endangered species such as the small tooth sawfish, American crocodile, and WestIndian manatee.

Carbon Sequestration: Mangroves are very effective at capturing and storing carbon, playing an important role in mitigating climate change. 

 

Mangrove species in Pelican Bay

All three species of mangroves native toFlorida are found in Pelican Bay: 

Red Mangrove (Rhizophoramangle): Known for its distinctive stilt-like prop roots, it grows closest to the water.

Black Mangrove (Avicenniagerminans): Typically found slightly inland from the red mangrove, it has finger-like projections called pneumatophores that protrude from the soil.

White Mangrove (Lagunculariaracemosa): Usually located at higher elevations, farther upland than the other two species, it lacks visible aerial roots but may develop peg roots in certain conditions. 

Residents and visitors to Pelican Bay can experience the indigenous mangrove forest through boardwalks and trails, like the one at ClamPass Park. There are also opportunities for kayaking and canoeing within the mangrove inlets.
